hours training required before the renewal of licences of Insurance
Agents

Regulation
5(3) of the IRDA (Licensing of Insurance Agents) Regulations, 2002 prescribes
that any individual agent or Corporate Agent before seeking renewal of
licence, is required to undergo 25 hours of practical training from an
Institute accredited by the Authority; in the case of Composite Agents,
the period of practical training is 50 hours.
The purpose of such practical training is to enable agents, who apply
for renewal of licenses, to acquaint themselves with the latest developments
in the insurance market. The topics under this practical training shall,
inter alia, include
In case of both Life and General Insurance business
1) New regulations/notifications/circulars issued by IRDA [which affect
intermediaries or policyholders]
2) New products introduced by the insurers in the market
3) All tax matters relating to and benefits accruing from such products
4) Advanced Sales Training
5) Services which policyholders expect from agents and provisions of agents’
code of conduct
6) Protection of policyholders’ interests and grievance redressal mechanism
7) A refresher of some important topics of previous 100-hour training,
on request from trainees
In addition to the above, the institute should obtain a feedback from
agents on the 100 hour pre-licensing training and send it to IRDA for
information.
Every insurer shall comply with these instructions for the purpose of
renewal of licenses of insurance agents under his organization. Every
Designated Person (DP) working in the insurer’s office shall be authorized
to renew the license on behalf of the Authority on receipt of a certification
from the accredited institute regarding successful completion of training.
